What Grok is and where to start

Choose a Grok product for the job. The brand, app, model and subscription are different things.

What you will achieve#

By the end, you will know where to begin your first task and what to verify before using a feature. You do not need a paid plan or a developer account to understand the options.

Grok is an AI assistant: it produces an answer from your request and the information available to it. It can draft useful text and confidently get a number wrong. Judge the result by whether it fulfils the task and can be checked.

Choose an entry point for your task#

  • Need an explanation, a draft or work with a source document? Start with standalone chat at grok.com. Choose the mobile app when working on your phone suits you.
  • Working with a post or the context of X? Read Grok on X and check that service’s settings separately.
  • Integrating AI into your own application? Go to the API developer chapter. An API is a programmatic interface through which your software communicates with a model.
  • Want to create a small application? See Build below. First prepare a concrete outcome and sample data.
  • Want to delegate work across accounts and services? Understand Grok Bot and its permissions before connecting work accounts.

When Build or Bot may help#

For a first Build task, try a calculator using invented data. For a first Bot task, choose a result you can review, such as comparing three documents. Distinguish preparation from publishing, sending or purchasing in your request.

Draft a task overview from these source materials. Output: task, owner, deadline and source. Mark missing information as “not stated”. Do not send anything or change any connected service yet.

If you choose Bot, continue with your first task in the dedicated Grok Bot chapter. It covers preparing a brief, checking the result and handling recurring work.

Slovak: three separate questions#

Start in your preferred language and specify the style you want. Check names, grammar and terminology in professional writing. For voice, first test a short sentence containing a name and a number. This guide’s language does not change your account’s country or service price.

Check your choice and continue#

You have made a useful choice when you can name the product, platform and task: for example, “standalone Grok, web, a short meeting summary”. If a tutorial shows different controls, compare these three details before investigating subscriptions.

Continue with your first useful task. If you are considering a purchase, read plans and billing first.
