How to choose an assistant

Decide using your tasks, costs and results. Personality labels and universal rankings do not help.

Compare the same task#

If you are considering Grok, ChatGPT, Claude or another assistant, prepare three tasks from your own work. These might be an email in your language, a document with check questions, and research requiring current sources. Use identical materials and criteria.

This chapter does not provide a current model ranking or compare unverified competitor features. It offers a method for your own decision. Before buying, check each service’s availability, prices and terms on its official pages and at checkout.

What to record#

CriterionHow to check it
AccuracySignificant mistakes and omissions on the same task.
LanguageNatural wording, terminology and the amount of editing required.
EvidenceWhether the service actually read the file and whether conclusions are supported.
UsabilityTime from instruction to usable result, including revisions.
CostFinal tax-inclusive amount, period, purchase channel and separate charges.
DataRules for the specific product and plan, training controls and sharing.

Criteria need not have equal weight. For text-heavy work, language quality may matter more than video generation. When working for a client, check their rules for sharing materials.

Choose by the work you do most#

TaskCompareA practical trial
Writing in your languageNatural wording and fidelity to the briefThe same email with a name, deadline and length limit.
Current research and XFreshness, original sources and news versus opinionThree claims you can verify outside the assistant’s answer.
Documents and spreadsheetsCompleteness, correct numbers and a usable fileA small file with one missing value and one duplicate.
Images and videoBrief compliance, editability and a usable exportThe same scene and dimensions, followed by one specific edit.
Work across applicationsRequired integrations, permissions and evidence of completionA small job with a clear deliverable; consider Bot within Grok.

Assess Grok, ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot in a specific product and plan. In a work account, integration availability and organizational rules may decide the choice. A feature list for another plan is not a result from your trial.

Run a short comparison#

  1. Choose a task whose correct result you know or can verify.
  2. Record the date, product, plan and available model. Interface language is not a pricing region.
  3. Provide identical materials and make one revision using specific feedback.
  4. Assess accuracy, usability and required edits. For similar results, repeat with another task.
  5. Choose an option that meets your needs at an acceptable final price. Recheck after major service changes.

One good or bad answer is not enough for a general verdict. Do not buy a subscription solely on a vendor’s demonstration.

A simple scorecard

Accuracy 0–5: […] — significant errors: […]
Usability 0–5: […] — missing parts: […]

For important work, a second assistant can act as a critic. Agreement between two answers is not independent evidence: verify a disputed point in the original document or data.
